Babysitter charged with manslaughter in 2014 scalding death of 1-year-old girl

How wicked can a person get, local authorities say a teenage babysitter purposefully held a baby in scalding water, angry at a messy diaper.
An 18-year-old Pontiac woman has been charged with manslaughter and second-degree child abuse in the death of a 12-month-old baby, who died of burns and multiple infections last year.
Samaria Chambers died Aug. 9, 2014, one day after her first birthday, and about two weeks after being badly burned in a bathtub.

On Thursday, Breeze Macha Henke, 18, was arrested by Oakland County sheriff’s deputies after a year-long investigation into the case.

The incident happened In July 2014 while Henke, then 17 and niece of the baby’s mother, was babysitting several children. Back then, Henke told police she started to draw a bath for the child when she was distracted and a 3-year-old child entered the bathroom and turned up the hot water dial.
On Friday, police said the original story she told detectives was not true and it was found that she had become angry at the baby because she had soiled her diaper.

Detectives determined by testing that the bath water reached a temperature of 158 degrees in the tub within ten seconds and held that temperature for almost one minute. The baby was burned from the stomach down. The burn expert at Detroit Children’s Hospital stated that the baby’s burns were consistent with her being held down in bath tub.

Henke was arraigned on Friday on a charge of homicide/manslaughter, which carries up to 15 years in prison, and second-degree child abuse, which is a potential 10-year felony, in the 50th District Court by Judge Thomas. Her bond was set at $250,000 cash or surety. Her next court date is Aug. 25.
