The Spotlight was on Beasts of
No Nation at the Film Independent Spirit Awards. Carol, The Diary of a
Teenage Girl, Krisha, The Look of Silence, Son of Saul and
Tangerine also received awards at the 2016 Spirit Awards, which was held
in a tent on the beach in Santa Monica.
Three of the four acting awards were awarded to black people, with Beasts of No Nation stars Abraham Attah (Best Male Lead) and Idris Elba (Best Supporting Male) winning alongside Tangerine breakout Mya Taylor (Best Supporting Female), who also became the first transgender actress to win a major award.
